Wenn wir dennoch in diesem einleitenden Kapitel kurz auf einige der hahptsächlichsten Phasen in der Entwickelung der geo logischen Kenntniss dieses Gebietes eingehen, so geschieht dies einerseits, um den Leser in den Gegenstand der Untersuchung und seine Schwierigkeiten einzuführen, andererseits in der Absicht, um zu zeigen, von welcher Schärfe z. Th. Die Beobachtungen älterer Autoren trotz der Unvollkommenheit der Hilfsmittel jener Zeit gewesen sind, und endlich, um den Antheil, den frühere Arbeitenam Stande unserer heutigen Erkenntniss haben, gebührend zu würdigen. Freilich wird bei solcher Betrachtung nicht verschwiegen werden durfen, dass nicht jede jüngere Arbeit durchweg einen Fortschritt über ihre Vorgängerinnen darstellt.

Die Entstehung des Begriffes nimmt ebenso wie die moderne Eintheilung des permischen und triadischen Systems ihren Ausgang von den Stätten des Jahrhunderte alten Mansfelder Bergbaus.
