9780230619159: Alexander the Great: Lessons from History's Undefeated General (World Generals Series)

When the Oracle of Delphi told Alexander the Great that he was invincible, it was right.

The son of the great King Philip II of Macedonia, Alexander was educated by Aristotle and commanded a wing of his father's army in the victory over the Thebans and Athenians at the Battle of Chaeronea―all when he was still just a teenager. By the time of his death at age 32, he had amassed an empire that stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River and included all of Persia and most of Egypt. He ruled as both the shah of Persia and as a pharaoh of Egypt by right of conquest, and he was also crowned king of Asia.

Here, historian Bill Yenne illuminates the legendary vision of this classical hero. Exhibiting the best traits of a battlefield leader, Alexander was audacious, aggressive, fearless and victorious. His unfailing integration of strategic vision and tactical genius took him to the ends of the earth, and into immortality as a military leader. Alexander's influence on cultural and political history and the scope of his military prowess remains awe-inspiring to this day.

From AudioFile:

This is a dense book, full of names, places, and time lines. Further, it's difficult to identify the places mentioned on contemporary maps since they have different terms for the ancient cities, rivers, and boundaries. Nonetheless, one gets a feeling for Alexander the man, who was most likely gay, and why he's considered by many to be the greatest hero of history. Descriptions of the Macedonian's prowess when leading in battle demonstrate his military brilliance and inspiring personality. Listeners hear why history has never forgotten this man or his influence. Narrator Paul Garcia never hesitates in crossing the vast sea of Greek, Arabic, and Latin words--never mind if we don't literally understand them. His skillful contribution, however, inflects them such that we can follow their context. J.A.H. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

Alexander the Great is considered one of the most successful commanders of all time and was known to be undefeated in battle. He is mentioned in the Bible as well as the Qur an, and is on the shortest of short lists whenever the world s best military leaders are cataloged. When asked to name other great military leaders, Caesar reportedly said Alexander was the only great one. Born in 356 BC, the son of Philip II of Macedonia, Alexander was educated by Aristotle, became a consummate horseman, and commanded a wing of his father s army in the victory over the Thebans and Athenians at the Battle of Chaeronea - all when he was still a teenager. By the time of his death at age 32, he had united Greece and had amassed an empire that stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River and included all of Persia and most of Egypt. As Yenne shows in this masterful biography, Alexander s influence on the course of cultural and political history and the scope of his military prowess remains awe-inspiring to this day.
