Descripción Condición: Gut. 167 Seiten; Illustr.; graph. Darst.; 24 cm; kart. Gutes Exemplar; der farb. illustr. Einband berieben u. m. minimalen Läsuren. - Englisch. - Aus der Bibliothek von Dr. Hans-Joachim Koloß, vormals Völkerkundemuseum Berlin. - Perhaps because the majority of the world's buildings have not been designed by formally trained architects the indigenous forms of habitation in most countries have received little serious study. Their beauty and harmony with their surroundings have often been acknowledged, and there has been a belated interest in recording or pre-serving the older vernacular types as they have begun to disappear. Such work has been primarily academic and has seldom been related to the social and environmental circumstances which inspired the habitations. Often, however, the vernacular building forms have solved problems in a way unrecognised by formally trained architects and planners. After an examination of past and present attitudes to vernacular architecture, this first collection of new studies looks in depth at specific examples in various parts of the world, considering the relationship of the forms to the communities and conditions which have produced them. Some types have had a long history, like the Norwegian Laftehus; others offer a basis for comparative examination like the Navajo hogan and Hopi pueblo of Arizona. House-forms in Baghdad, Old Delhi and Rajastan are compared with those now proposed by the resettlement and development planners for these regions, with significant conclusions drawn from the evidence. In this new approach to vernacular architecture the squatter homes in the barriadas of Peru, the sprawling suburbs of Athens, or the geodesic structures made from the discarded materials of a wastetul society by the 'drop-out' communities of Colorado, are no less important than the study of Swiss valley farmhouses or the compounds of the Black Volta.
