This is a well written and interesting book covering a topic that isn't always well understood, and is a book that will serve the reader well in every year of their course. Oncology This book is a valuable reference that encompasses the whole breadth of surgery within three tomes. A successful addition to the Oxford Core Text series, this new book provides concise yet comprehensive coverage of the essential topics in oncology. Primarily using a systems-based approach, the book highlights important issues looking at the conditions that are clinically relevant to the experiences of the medical student. Integrating the student's knowledge across specialites such as pathology, surgery, psycho-oncology and palliative care, the authors have included summary boxes, further reading and similar features to ensure an easy-to-use, accessible learning and revision aid. The textbook covers the principles and practice of oncology and is divided into two sections, the first section focusing on the general principles of cancer, including chapters on aetiology, epidemiology, biology and pathology of cancer. Other chapters include cancer prevention, staging and psychology. The principles of cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are described. There is a detailed chapter on modern palliative care of cancer. The second half of the book gives information on each of the common cancers grouped into specialties. When each cancer is discussed the aetiology, presentation, signs on examination, investigation and management are outlined. Most chapters conclude with a selection of articles to which the student can be referred for further reading. Each chapter is liberally illustrated with high quality colour photographs and chapters have bullet points for ease of reference. Most chapters are illustrated with a number of case histories, in line with modern educational practice. Oncology is designed to meet the needs of medical students in the clinical years and will also be of value to cancer nurses, family doctors and all health care professionals involved in the care of cancer patients.
