There are sections dealing with important sites, cultures, and ancient peoples, and with the technique of modern archaeological research. Other entries describe field monuments and the many kinds of artifacts found in excavations. Technical terms (which are often intimidating) are lucidly explained. Because the authors of this book designed it primarily for the many people who have become aware of archaeology via current news and information media, through unexpectedly digging up a potsherd while spading a flower bed, or from a visit to an ancient monument, they have not assumed that readers have a wide academic knowledge of archaeology. Instead, they have put forth clear explanations for those who have had chance acquaintance with the field and would like to become more familiar with an enthralling and rewarding study. Serious students, too, will find the guide valuable, particularly when they are dealing with aspects of the subject outside their immediate field of special interest. Authors Warwick Bray and David Trump lay no claim to having the last word on any of the entries in the book. Indeed, they say that every archaeological statement should be. prefaced by the phrase "In the light of present evidence." Their credentials for presenting the evidence, however, are excellent. Mr. Bray is Lecturer in American Archaeology at London University. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from St. John's College, Cambridge, has taken part in excavations in Britain, Italy, and the Colombian Andes and spent a year in archaeological research in Sardinia, and is the author of Everyday Life of the Incas.
