Utilitarianism - Tapa blanda

Utilitarianism was not only a major school of philosophical thought, but a powerful reforming influence on government and legislation in the nineteenth century and after. The father of the school, Jeremy Bentham, was a most effective exponent of Utilitarian ideas, particularly in the field of politics and law; but his disciple John Stuart Mill gave, partly by way of criticism of Bentham, the most subtle and comprehensive statement of Utilitarian thought, which particularly in moral philosophy, is still vigorously alive.
Although his position as set out in 'Utilitarianism' is often violently attacked, for many the validity of Mill's thought remains unrefuted.
