Pierre Corneille (1606-1684) was a French tragedian. He is generally considered one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Molière and Racine. As a young man, he earned the valuable patronage of Cardinal Richelieu, who was trying to promote classical tragedy along formal lines, but later quarreled with him. Corneille's best known play, Le Cid, about a medieval Spanish warrior, was denounced by the newly formed Académie française for breaching the unities. The Imitation of Christ (or De imitatione Christi), by Thomas à Kempis is one of the most widely read Christian spiritual books in existence. It was first published anonymously, in Latin, c. 1418; several other authors have been proposed, but Kempis's authorship is generally accepted now. Corneille first produced his poetical paraphrase in French in 1651. This is a 1659 edition, complete in two volumes, heavily illustrated with engraved copperplates. Presents very well. Gift quality.
