A Defense of the Apologie of the Church of England, Conteining an Answer to a certaine Booke lately set forth by M. Harding, and entituled, A Confutation of &c., 652 pp. II. A Replie Unto M. Hardings Answer: By Perusing whereof, the discreet and diligent Reader may easily see the weake and unstable grounds of the Roman religion, which of late hath been accounted Catholike. 472 pp. III. A View of a Seditious Bull sent into England, from Pius Quintus Bishop of Rome, 1569. 290 pp (also includes Titles IV & V). IV. An Exposition Upon the Two Epistles of the Apostle Saint Paul to the Thessalonians. V. Certaine Sermons Preached Before the Queens Maiestie, at Pauls Crosse, and elsewhere. Last leaf/page missing (p. 291). In fair condition. Contemporary binding very lightly scuffed at edges & corners. Leather spine rubbed at head and tail. Gilt lettering on title label bright and clean. General scuffing to red cloth on boards. Previous ownership signature found at top of modern front end-page. Pages 1 through approximately 50 exhibit worn fore-edges & moderate soiling, but are reinforced by previous binder. Light toning throughout remainder of text-block, with some instance of age-staining and finger-soiling. Water dampness staining exhibited to top edge of approximately 250 to page 290 of title V's text-block. Last leaf of title V lacking (p. 291), an incomplete work. Modern binding tight and intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. John Jewel (alias Jewell) (1522-1571) of Devon, England was Bishop of Salisbury form 1559 to his death. After the theological pioneering of Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli, Calvin and other first-tier reformers, the Reformation became less about the theologies of individuals and more about the religion and politics of nations, kingdoms, and continents. Jewel's Apology of the Church of England, a document more important in its political-historical significance than its theological significance, represents an attempt to provide a statement of faith for the Church of England under Elizabeth I and answer challenges and accusations of the Romanists against the Protestants. Jewel, like early Protestants, maintains that man, because of original sin and corrupt nature, possesses no soteriological resources. Man can produce no good or meritorious works, and so "there is no trust to be put in the merits of our works and actions." Consequently, man must hope and trust in Christ for his salvation. Jewel claims the Roman Catholic Church has departed from scripture, the church fathers, and church councils; asserting that the Protestant churches are the revival of the true Christian church. The writings of Bishop Jewel, which are chiefly controversial, are greatly valued even in our day, and are freely used in two departments of Church controversy: on the question between the Church of England and the Church of Rome, and on the question of respecting the devotional sentiments of the English Protestant fathers.
