Editorial: Leiden: at the shop of S. and J. Luchtmans, 1839
Año de publicación: 1839
Edición: 1st Edition
Quarto (280 × 220 mm). Original marbled card wrappers. Spine rubbed, hinges a little tender in places, but a superb and entirely unsophisticated copy, largely unopened. Arabic and Latin types; dedication leaf to Hendrik Engelinus Weyers printed in Arabic. First edition in the original Arabic of Suyuti's biographical dictionary of Qur'anic exegetes, edited by Dutch scholar Albert Meursinge from an incomplete manuscript: a most appealing publication, printed on large paper with deep impressions of the types; uncommon with just four copies on Copac (BL, Oxford, two in Cambridge); OCLC adds SOAS and some two dozen copies worldwide, mostly in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, none traced in North America. Albert Meursinge (1812-50) taught at the college for colonial administrators established by the Dutch government in Delft and is notable for having produced the first Dutch handbook of Islamic law, edited from a Malay manuscript. Suyuti was born in Cairo to Circassian and Persian heritage in 1445. Best remembered for his commentary on the Qur'an, he also wrote on Sufism, law and hadith: "his writings covered almost the entire gamut of the Islamic sciences. He was the most productive of all Islamic authors" (Leaman, ed., The Qur'an: An Encyclopaedia, p. 618). N° de ref. de la librería 110218
