Condición del libro: Very Good

First edition of this early version of Strauss's notorious work, Das Leben Jesu kritisch bearbeitet (1835-6), abridged for the general reader. Lord Shaftesbury called Das Leben Jesu 'the most pestilential book ever vomited out of the jaws of hell'. 'The publication of 'The Life of Jesus Critically Considered' aroused a storm of controversy; its revolutionary thesis and content were violently attacked, and wrenched out of contex. Strauss's principal objective was to explode not only the traditional orthodox view of the Gospel accounts but also earlier rationalistic views, notably those of H.S. Reimarus. He maintained with unyielding vigour the theory that the Christ of the Gospels, excepting the barest scraps of personal history, was the unintentional creation of the early Christian Messianic expectations. The miracles, to which he applied the severest and narrowest criteria, were thus largely dismissed as fiction' (Printing and the Mind of Man 300). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 2 parts in one volume, large 8vo, frontispiece portrait of Strauss, xxii, 557, [2] pp., contemporary half cloth over marbled boards, spine gilt with light wear to head, second original wrapper bound in, some light browning and the occasional spot, a very good copy.
