Garrard was the Captain of the Fifth Cavalry, U.S.A. Half-bound in later half-morocco (goat) . Original publisher's gilt embossed mounted cavalryman on front board and same image repeated on rear board, in blind. Contrasting spine title with gilt-on-black. Five raised bands, compartments ruled and ornamented gilt. Early owner's inscriptions to front free endpaper, dated July, 1863, December 1874, respectively, and traces of glue residue to front pastedown. Generally bright with just a bit of soiling. 114 pp. plus 12 pp. Ads (Van Nostrand Military and Naval publications). Quite Scarce. Previous owner of this book, whose signature and date (1863) appear on front free endpaper, was First Lieutenant P.B. Johnson (promoted to Captain and Assistant Quartermaster the following year, in1864) was a well-known newspaper correspondent and Republican activist in the states of Washington and Oregon, becoming editor and (soon thereafter) sole owner of the Walla Walla (Washington) Union, at some point working for the Portland, Oregonian. and finally giving up his financial interest in the Walla Walla paper in 1890.
