373 pages. An unqualified classic, and a book that every serious collector of American literature must have on his shelf in a 1st Edition. Binding A, with all first issue points present. The book is in its original cloth binding. The front and rear boards are blind-stamped with decorative devices, and the spine is lettered and decorated in gilt. The word "Autocrat" is embossed in blind on the front and rear boards in the center of a circular decorative device. Two title pages: There is a title page with an engraving and tissue guard preceding the second, main title page, and there are 8 full page engravings within the book itself, each under its own tissue guard. There is a period following the word "Table" on the title page, and a period following the word "Company". The front endpapers both list "Works of Permanent Value", while the rear endpapers are headed "Poetry and the Drama" on the left free page, and "School Books" on the right rear pastedown. Three fleur-de-lis on spine plus publisher's device. The boards are very clean, with occasional wear to the cloth at the extremeties. The cloth has worn through to the boards beneath, to varying degrees, at each of the corner points, but this does not harm the good appearance of the book as much as one might expect. The cloth of the headpiece and tailpiece of the spine has been worn and slightly torn, but is present, and, again, the wear does not detract from the overall nice appearance of this book. The gilt lettering on the spine is clean, clear and bright. The great majority of the cloth binding is absolutely free of any sign of wear whatsoever, any wear being confined to scattered spots at the extremeties. The book stands straight, and the volume remains very firm and tight in its binding, no pages loose, missing or torn. The hinges are sound and undamaged, and the corners, though worn, are unbumped. There is a small smudge of unknown origin on pages 70-71, no text occluded, and while the page edges are very faintly age-toned, they are also exceptionally clean, and all text is clear, sharp and extremely legible. The signature of American writer Benjamin Heydrick appears on a front free endpaper, but there is no other writing, underlining, highlighting or markings of any such kind in the book. The noted flaws aside, this remains a solid, clean, attractive, and wholly intact and complete copy of an important work in American literature. N° de ref. de la librería 2000
