A large and attractive manuscript letter/certificate of appointment signed at the foot Aberdeen and the seal in red wax of the LOord Lieutenancy off Aberdeenshire attached on a white silk lappet. The document has its original two vertical and one horizontal folds and is attached by the blank back of one section to an old card album leaf. General Peter Lumsden was a distinguised figure with long service in India, Afghanistan, China, and Bhutan. He was also an Aide de Camnp to Queen Victoria. The Lumsden family seat was at Belhelvie in Aberdeenshire and his elder brother, Sir Harry was also a distinguished general who had founded the Guides Regiment at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny. Sold with a signed manuscript letter from Lord Aberdeen in his own hand, dated June 17 1889 informing Lumsden that the earl had put his name forward to the Queen. This on a small sheet of writing paper with a single fold and also tipped to a separate old card album leaf by the blank reversde of half of the letter.The Earl of Aberdeen served as Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeen and later as Governor of Canada in the 1890s.
