Descripción The Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center Association, Sioux City, Iowa, 2007. Pictorial Softcover. Estado de conservación: Fine. Not Given. "Even residents ansd visitors who hadn't the slightest interest in livestock marketing couldn't ignore the Sioux City Stockyards. Powerful odor from pens and packinghouses trumpeted the industry for miles around. Complaints about 'that smell' however, only amused the people who understood the true essence of the Yards: monery. In its most robust, and there were many from 1887 to 2002, the Sioux City central public market handled hundreds of millions in livestock. Allied industries, including giant meatpackers Swift, Cudahy and Armour, contributerd to the industry. It was the promise of money that surely drew James E. Booge into meatpacking when he arrived in Sioux City in October 1858 and joinedhis brother, Harris D. Booge in a wholesale business that handled dry goods, groceries, dishes and agricultural implements. James Booge, a Vermont native, saw Soiux City's rich potential as a livestock marketing and meatpacking center. Situated on an enviable spot on the Mississippi River, the community had easy access to an ample supply of pigs fattened on Northwest Iowa's fertile labnd. Railroad connections to lucrative consumer markets were inevitable." This book has 206 pages and is profusely illustrated. The book is a SIGNED AND DATED PRESENTATION copy from the author, Marcia Poole. Overall, this is a FINE copy of this EXTREMELY SCARCE title. Signed by Author. Nº de ref. de la librería 062054
