Título: The true Effigies of the Members of the ...
Editorial: London Jan. 30
Año de publicación: 1735
Broadside, sm 4to., overall 7" x 8", engraved, neatly tipped onto stiff backing sheet. A Satire on the meeting by a group of gentlemen on the 30th January 1735 at a French Tavern in Suffolk Street describing themselves as the Calve's Head Club. At this meeting they dressed up in bloody clothes, exposed themselves to the mob who they treated with wine and strong drink, and made a bonfire before the door. This was too much for the mob who, disliking this cruel frolic, demolished the windows of the tavern and would have set the place on fire if the guards had not been called. The Calve's Head Club was set up shortly after the execution of King Charles I in derision of the memory of that King and the Stuart family. The toasts at the meeting are printed beneath the illustration: "The Healths", "To the pious Memory of Oliver Cromwell", "Damnation to the Race of the Stuarts", "To the glorious Year, 1648", "To the Man in the Mask, &c. &c. &c."
