Descripción

xvii, 253p. including photographs, previous owner's slightly smeared signature, hinge weakening, boards spotted with a worn spot on spine. Stanford, a black minister, left England for the United States in order to write a brief sketch of African American life, but "was soon convinced that a pamphlet of ten or a dozen pages would not afford space enough for a satisfactory description to be made." The book reflects Stanford's horror at what he found: "When [the history of the American Negro] shall be written it will be a terrible comment on the character of many so-called Christians.".
