Descripción
In contemporary vellum. [5] 6-104 p.; [8] 126 p. Scarce illustrated early Dutch edition of this translation of Las Casas' La Brevísima relación, together with another anti-Spanish propaganda work. An early abridged illustrated Dutch edition of these popular works, propaganda against the Spaniards, the second Cloppenburch edition (first in 1620), with altogether thirty-seven engraved plates. Cloppenburch (Jan Evertszoon; 1571-1648), the Amsterdam publisher of patriotic and religious books and tracts associated with the Dutch Reformed Church, released these works together with separate title pages and pagination. The title pages are illustrated with a portrait of Philip of Spain, his vassals, "Don Jan" and "Duc d'Alve", surrounded by pictures of children, women, and men being tortured, alluding to the cruelty of the Spaniards in the Americas and the Netherlands. The illustrations of the first book, an abridged translation of Bartolomé de las Casas' La Brevísima relación (1552), were made after Theodore de Bry's (for the 1598 Frankfurt Latin edition), and the plates were re-carved since the 1620 first edition. The second book, a sequel to Las Casas' work, Tweede deel van de Spiegel der Spaense, is an abridged and illustrated version of Johannes Gysius' Oorsprong en voortgang der Neder-landtscher beroerten ende ellendicheden (1616), a history of the Dutch revolt against Spain in 1555-98. Both books are illustrated with plates depicting gruesome scenes of executions, tortures, mutilations, and other crimes and atrocities perpetrated by the Spaniards in the New World and in Europe. Scarce, WorldCat locates only five copies of this edition in institutional holdings in Germany (Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel), Sweden (Skoklosters slotts bibliotek), and the US (Yale, NYPL, JCB). Pages tanned due to aging. Fingermarks to the lower outer corners. Binding loose. [1] Letterpress title in engraved frame. With 17 large, engraved illustrations. Slightly over-trimmed at the side edges, occasionally touching the engravings. First leaves somewhat loose, thus with some crease and chipping to the edges. [2] Letterpress title in engraved frame. With 20 large, engraved illustrations. Lower corners of O4 and P2 missing, a closed tear to Q1 due to the flaw of the paper cast. Otherwise in good condition. N° de ref. del artículo 3123
