Descripción: New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885, 1885. Octavo (214 x 164 mm). Publisher's half morocco, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, rebacked with original spine laid down. Custom red morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Boards slightly rubbed, one spot of soiling above text on title page, pp. 147-152 with minor loss from each upper corner not affecting text. Photogravure portrait frontispiece (second state, with the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Company and with "Karl Gerhardt, Sc." added to the finished edge of the shoulder), illustrated throughout with 173 text illustrations after E. W. Kemble. First US edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the month of publication on the preliminary blank, "To Major J. B. Pond With the affections of Mark Twain Feb. 21/85", and further extensively inscribed by Pond ("This is the first copy that the author ever set his eyes on ") Major James Burton Pond (1838-1903) became a lecture manager after a distinguished career in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Pond was hired by Twain in the summer of 1884 to oversee his lengthy 1884-85 lecture tour which would encompass eighty cities and number over a hundred performances. The tour was a critical and commercial success, earning Twain $17,000, and included some of Twain's first readings from Huckleberry Finn. Only three substantive changes were introduced after the first printing: at p. 13 the erroneous page reference "88" was changed to "87"; at p. 57 the misprint "with the was" was corrected to "with the saw"; and at p. 9 the misprint "Decided" was corrected to "Decides". This copy has all these in first state. The frontispiece was printed separately and inserted at random, and has no relation to the order of the printed sheets. Copies in the original half morocco binding are the least often met with. Less than two weeks before publication, the publisher Webster announced that he was binding 20,000 copies in cloth, another 2,500 in sheep, and 500 copies in half morocco. Webster's own copy, also half morocco, was dated by him as having been received from the binder on 26 November 1884. At some stage it was realised that the Uncle Silas illustration on page 283 had been mischievously tampered with. In this copy, the illustration is in first state. BAL 3415; Grolier, 100 American, 87; Johnson, pp. 43-50; Kevin MacDonnell, "Huck Finn among the Issue-Mongers," Firsts; The Book Collector's Magazine, Volume 8, Number 9 (September 1998), pp. 28-35. Descripción: Charles L. Webster & Co.; The American Publishing Company, Harper & Brothers; etc., New York; etc., 1885. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. For sale is an unprecedented Mark Twain first edition collection. All 54 of the books in this Mark Twain set are first editions, first printings, and first issues. There is one book signed by Mark Twain, "The Innocents Abroad", a signed limited edition bound in leather, of which only 512 copies were made. Other highlights include: "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" Twain's very first book published in 1867, one of only 1,000 copies; "The Gilded Age" published in 1873, this being the only copy with all first issue points currently available online; "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" published in 1876, the first UK edition which preceded the American publication by six months; "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" published in 1885; "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" published in 1889, a rare copy with all 3 first issue points present; and "Tom Sawyer Abroad; Tom Sawyer, Detective and Other Stories" published in 1896, one of only 1,000 copies of the first edition. Determining whether a Mark Twain book is a first edition, is a very difficult and tedious process. Many books had to be returned because just one of the ten first issue points were lacking. A complete description of the bibliographic and condition details of the 54 books are available upon request. Signed by Author(s). Nº de ref. del artículo: 003003

Descripción: New York: Webster, 1885, 1885. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, in the original publisher s deluxe binding, available at a premium price. This copy has the rare first state of the illustration on p. 283, as well as the other earliest points described in BAL. The frontispiece is an insert occurring in three states with no priority of issue. In 1884, salesmen traveled throughout the United States selling advance subscriptions to Huckleberry Finn. The salesman s dummy contained an illustration on page 283 showing an unnoticed and innocent slight curve at the fly of Silas Phelps s trousers. In October 1884, in anticipation of Christmas publication, a few hundred sets of sheets were sent to be bound in expensive half morocco and sheep bindings. As in the prospectus shown to customers, these copies showed the curve at page 283. The present Huck is one of those very few copies. Soon after these copies were printed and shipped for binding, an unknown individual altered the plate on page 283 by crudely engraving a penis at Phelps s fly. By the time the defacement was discovered on November 25, 1884, thousands of copies had been printed. The New York Tribune quoted publisher Charles Webster: Had the first edition been run off our loss would have been $250,000. Had the mistake not been discovered, Mr. Clemens s credit for decency and morality would have been destroyed. To avert disaster, the leaf containing the offending illustration was painstakingly cut out of each copy and replaced with a leaf showing the new printing of the plate. The newly engraved plate eliminated the defacement but also eliminated the faint line that had been printed innocently in the prospectus and the copies sent out to be bound in leather. In later printings in 1885 the replacement of the leaf was not necessary. The result of this complicated printing history is that the illustration exists in three states: 1st: integral leaf with slight curve at fly; 2nd: leaf canceled, replaced with new leaf showing no curve; 3rd: integral leaf showing no curve. Because the defacement occurred only after advance sheets were shipped to be bound in leather, the plate in its original state exists only in the prospectus and in early copies in publisher s leather (later leather-bound copies show the third state of p. 283). Unrestored first edition copies of Huck Finn with the trouser illustration in the rare first state are prized by collectors and infrequently obtainable. Provenance: art collector and philanthropist Leigh B. Block, bookplate. Grolier 100 American Books 8760, BAL 3415. Original half brown morocco, the publisher s deluxe binding. Very light rubbing. Fine. Half morocco case. Nº de ref. del artículo: ABE-1564604864482

Descripción: Charles L. Webster and Company, New York, 1885. Condición: Fine. First American edition. A Fine copy in the publisher's green cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Contains the three first printing points: "Huck Decided" on p. 9; "Him and another Man" listed on p. 88; and "with the was" on p. 57. The other leaves were assembled at random and have no bearing on whether a copy is first or second printing, although variant states exist. A Fine copy of the book and of exceptional scarcity in this condition. Without repair or work of any kind. Housed in a custom clamshell. The book that Hemingway claimed was the source for all modern American literature and "the best book we've had." BAL 3415. MacDonnell, 31. Recounting the adventures of Huckleberry Finn as he flees his own abusive father and aids Jim in his escape from slavery, Twain's novel has been praised for its "distinctly American voice," putting at its center two common people who find an uncommon friendship. "Today perhaps the novel's greatest significance lies in its conception of childhood, as a time of risk, discovery, and adventure. Huck is no innocent: He lies, steals, smokes, swears, and skips school. He accepts no authority, not from his father or the Widow Douglas or anyone else. And it is the twin images of a perilous, harrowing odyssey of adventure and perfect freedom from all restraints that so many readers find entrancing" (Mintz). A metaphor for a young and rebellious nation, as well as its individualist inhabitants, Huckleberry Finn defies genre by being simultaneously an adventure story, a road novel, a coming of age tale, an expression of nostalgia for the expansive natural spaces lost to industrialization, and an exploration of race and class. Listed on the American Scholar 100 Best American Novels and one of the 100 Best Novels Written in English. Fine. Nº de ref. del artículo: 3075

Descripción: New York, 1886. Hardcover. Condición: Good. Signed Book. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). New York: Charles Webster, 1886. Second American edition. 8 3/8 x 6 5/8 in. With several prints, clippings, and other ephemera tipped in. Rebound at the Roycroft bindery. "Taking the pledge will not make bad liquor good, but it will improve it" Additional Images Available Upon RequestHistorical BackgroundThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Moby-Dick are often contenders for the title of "greatest American novel." Indisputable, however, is Clemens's sense of humor, as his inscribed and signed aphorism on the title page here indicates: "To Mr. Garth W. Cate: Taking the pledge will not make bad liquor good, but it will improve it. Truly Yours, Mark Twain, Nov. 25/06." This is the second American edition, with 174 illustrations by E. W. Kemble and a photogravure plate of a Clemens portrait bust by Karl Gerhardt. Additionally, there is an albumen photograph of Clemens mounted on the recto of the Gerhardt plate, an engraved portrait of Clemens mounted on verso of rear endpaper, several newspaper clippings, and three letters detailing the book's history and travels. Clemens's humorous inscription is explained in an accompanying letter from Garth W. Cate to Victor Jacobs, October 14, 1964. In 1906, Garth Cate was working as the lecture manager for Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York. Cate brought his well-worn childhood copy of Huckleberry Finn in to the Roycroft bindery to have it rebound. Hubbard saw the book and suggested Cate send it Clemens to for an inscription, and even offered to write Twain personally. Cate explains: "So I sent HUCK back to its spiritual father, and when it returned I was somewhat shocked, having been sent to a temperance Sunday School by a whiskey fearing mother. . Later on I was to marry a Christian Science practitioner, and when she saw this inscription she exclaimed: 'Why, that is the most immoral thing I ever saw! How could a great author send such a sentiment to a young man?' "Twain was no great fan of the temperance movement, especially its more radical proponents, whom he felt hurt the message. "Temperate temperance is best," Twain said in 1896. "Intemperate temperance injures the cause of temperance, while temperate temperance helps it in its fight against intemperate intemperance. Fanatics will never learn that." He also disparaged the idea of total abstinence, hoping "to totally abstain from total abstinence itself" and disliked temperance pledges, especially when impressed upon youth by older generations.Garth Cate (1883?-1974) was an author, newspaperman, and social activist. He was born is Portage, Wisconsin, worked for newspapers in New York and Chicago, and retired to Tryon, North Carolina, working as a travel consultant. He was involved in literary circles that included Tom Wolfe, George Bernard Shaw, and Carl Sandburg. An early environmentalist and civil rights activist, Cate rubbed elbows with other social reformers such as Margaret Sanger and Roycroft founder Elbert Hubbard.Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) was an American writer and philosopher. He is best known for founding the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York. Part of the Arts and Crafts movement, Roycroft championed artisanal production and attracted printers, leather workers, metalsmiths, furniture makers, and bookbinders, the latter being one of Hubbard's particular areas of interest. By 1900, the Roycroft philosophy of positive working conditions, communal effort, and passion for creativity had attracted over 500 people to East Aurora. Hubbard was also deeply involved in social issues ranging from civil rights, to woman suffrage, to anti-war efforts. Ironically, he died when a German submarine torpedoed the British passenger liner Lusitania in 1915.Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), also known as Mark Twain, needs no introduction.ConditionSome soiling and rea. Descripción: New York Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First American edition, first state (see note); small 4to; portrait frontispiece of the author after the bust by sculptor Karl Gerhardt, illustrations by Edward W. Kemble, small ink stain on fore-edge otherwise internally fine; publisher's green cloth blocked in gilt & black, some very minor rubbing to extremities, but overall an excellent copy. 'All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn' (Ernest Hemingway, The Green Hills of Africa). A superb first American edition of this ground-breaking Mark Twain novel, simultaneously a classic of children's and American literature. Sold by subscription, Huckleberry Finn was illustrated and finely bound in leather bindings (sheep or half morocco), in blue cloth for those who wanted it uniform with Tom Sawyer (1877), and, as here, in green cloth. There is no established priority between them, and all were available to the public on the same day in February 1885. A number of errors were discovered and then corrected during the printing of the first edition. Copies with the earliest, uncorrected states are always sought after by collectors. In this copy, the title-page is a cancel with the copyright notice dated 1884 (C, BAL second state, with the first state only noted in the publisher's prospectuses and advanced sheets), while the frontispiece is in the first state with the tablecloth visible and unsigned on the finished edge of the bust (A, BAL first state). Furthermore, the following issue points are respected: on p.13, the illustration captioned 'Him and another Man' is wrongly listed as being on p.88 (A, BAL first state); p.9 with the misprint 'Decided' (A, BAL first state); p.57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads 'with the was' instead of 'with the saw' (A, BAL first state); p.143, missing 'l' in the illustration (A, BAL first state); p.155, the final '5' in the pagination is missing (A, BAL first state), and on p.161, the signature mark is absent (A, BAL first state). The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer 'let fresh air into the minds of parents who had shut the door on their own childhood, and they will be classics the world over as long as there are boys' (Grolier, 100 American Books). BAL 3415; Grolier (American), 87. Nº de ref. del artículo: 99598

Descripción: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. Hardcover. Condición: Collectible: Very Good. First Edition. Publisher's original 1/2 leather, with page edges, pastedowns, and endpapers all marbled. One of just 500 copies printed (Raptis Rare Books, internet article, March 2014) and comes with a copy of the infamous "priapic plate", one of 100 proof copies made by Merle Johnson from an original leaf from an unbound copy found in the collection of Willard S. Morse.///LAID in is a hand written response, declining an invitation, on a folded Quarry Farm labeled note, dated "Sept. 17/03", and SIGNED, "S. L. Clemens". (Quarry Farm was the home of Susan Langdon Crane, sister of Mark Twain's wife Olivia, and often the summer residence of the Twains. Mark Twain wrote, at least in part, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn while at Quarry Farm). The note sheet was created with a fold to yield 4 writing surfaces although this message is confined solely to the letterhead panel; The note was then manually folded, horizontally. It was written 5 weeks prior to the Twain family leaving for Italy and was penned during the last summer they spent together at Quarry Farm, as Olivia died in Italy the following June. ///CONDITION OF THE NOTE: Very good-near fine, with a touch of toning, faint soiling, two miniscule specks on the letterhead panel, the faint horizontal crease, and light peeling on the rear panel where it had been affixed to some other surface. ///CONDITION OF THE BOOK: The spine and corners have been professionally restored (corners still showing the bumped tips) and the marbled surfaces have some scratches and nicks. Interior condition problems: 1.) The pastedown/endpaper hinges have been reinforced, 2.) the front endpaper has a 1/8"x 1/4" upper corner chip, 3.) there is scattered light foxing on the front and rear the preliminary pages, 4.) leaves 3-18 have areas of (food?) staining heaviest on page 17 with bleeding back to the copyright page and finally vanishing on page 36, 5.) the bottom corner of page 23-24 has a 1/2"x7/8" chip. 6.) the rest of the text has occasional soiling, some perimeter stains, a few tipped corners, one dog-eared page, and most pages have light perimeter toning. ///ISSUE POINTS: The tissue guarded front plate is second state with no cloth visible under the bust. The title/copyright leaf is integral (lack of uniform opinion on this point), "Him and another man" is incorrectly listed at page 88 (instead of page 87 where it appears), page 57 has "with the was" on line 11 from the bottom, page 143 is missing the "l" in "Col." (which is part of the illustration at the top line of the text) and has the broken "b"in "body" on line 7, the final 5 of page 155 is lacking (again, lacks consensus), the illustration on page 283 is bound in with the noticeable curve on the fly of Silas Phelp's trousers, and the final leaf is blank. ///CONDITION OF THE PROOF PLATE: The plate is lightly toned and there are some creases, and a small hole (1/8" x 1/16") on the right edge; repaired on the verso with a small piece of tape. ///OVERALL: in spite of the aforementioned flaws, this is a very good and quite scarce 130 year old volume. Several of these leather bound copies are in university and library collections, while others have surely been destroyed or lost, leaving precious few for private collections. Signed. Descripción: Charles L. Webster & Company, New York, 1885. Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. Publisher's library binding of full sheep, the scarcest of the bindings for this title, here very skillfully rebacked retaining the original leather spine labels. With 174 illustrations by E. W. Kemble. BAL 3415. Earliest issue for four points of BAL's seven points and with McBride's point. Recent Twain scholarship convincingly establishes three changes from the printing plates of the first printing of 30,000 copies and later printings: 1) an erroneous page reference "88" on page 13 later changed to "87" (BAL's point 2); 2) the misprint "with the was" on page 57 later corrected to "with the saw" (BAL's point 3); and 3) the misprint "Decided" on page 9 later changed to "Decides" (not noted by BAL). This copy has all three first printing points as well as most of the earliest points for BAL, lacking only the conjugate title page and having the conjugate page 283 with the vertical fly and the frontispiece with the credit to Heliotype but without the scarf. Hinges tight. Internally a very clean copy and very unusual as such. Light wear to corners, faint tape stains to boards. Near Fine. Nº de ref. del artículo: 003426

Descripción: New York Charles L. Webster 1885, 1885. First edition. First Issue. With 174 black and white illustrations by E.W. Kemble. Large 8vo, original publisher's sheep binding with the red and black lettering labels on the spine. It is estimated that only 2500 copies were issued in this binding. 366 pp. A very pleasing and handsome copy. Light, expert and unobtrusive refurbishment to the joints. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND GREATEST BOOKS IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. A very handsome copy with the following earliest setting states as listed by BAL: "Him and another Man" is listed at page 88, BAL's first state; page 57, eleventh line from the bottom reads ".with the was.," BAL's first state; page 155 with final 5 "stamped in" by hand (see Underhill), and matching the original font in the setting of the page number (no priority, occurring randomly in all three states independent of other major signs of first printing sheets, but this setting seems to appear least often); the portrait frontispiece is in BAL's first state, "heliotype" imprint on the portrait frontispiece, title page with 1884 copyright on verso, p.9: the heading for Chapter 6 reads "Decided" (later corrected to "Decides"), p.143: "I" in "Col." (line 1) missing and "b" in "body" (line 7) broken, p. 161: signature mark "11" is missing, final leaf is a blank. Very rare with this many first issue points. The sheep bindings are generally in poor condition, but this copy is still quite nice. Along with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn is considered the stepping stone to modern American literature. And along with Tom Sawyer, for the first time, the hero of the novel was a boy. These books are landmarks and Hemingway often offered his opinion that the modern novel would have been impossible without them. With Whitman s Leaves of Grass and Melville s Moby Dick, they provide us with a view of America transcending its past and beginning its future. Nº de ref. del artículo: 8529

Descripción: New York: Webster, 1885, 1885. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn . . . it is the best book we ve had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since. Ernest Hemingway A lovely copy of Huckleberry Finn. This is the first American edition, with the key first issue text points. A variety of errors were discovered and corrected during the course of printing the first edition, and collectors have always preferred the earliest, uncorrected states. These points are the page reference 88 on p. 13 (later corrected to 87), the p. 57 misprint with the was ( with the saw ), and the misprint Decided on p. 9 ( Decides ). The title-page and p. 283 are cancels, as desired in cloth copies. The other known points are of no significance in determining the sequence of the printing of the sheets (MacDonnell). Full details are available on request. Sold by subscription, Huckleberry Finn was lavishly bound and illustrated to appeal to casual buyers approached by sample-wielding salesmen. As a result, the first edition is the most attractive and eye- catching of all American literary classics. In 1905 the Brooklyn Public Library banned Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, prompting the author to write to the librarian: I am greatly troubled by what you say. I wrote Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn for adults exclusively, and it always distressed me when I find that boys and girls have been allowed access to them. The mind that becomes soiled in youth can never again be washed clean. I know this by my own experience, and to this day I cherish an unappeased bitterness against the unfaithful guardians of my young life, who not only permitted but compelled me to read an unexpurgated Bible through before I was 15 years old. None can do that and ever draw a clean sweet breath again on this side of the grave. All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn it is the best book we ve had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since (Ernest Hemingway.) Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer let fresh air into the minds of parents who had shut the door on their own childhood, and they will be classics the world over as long as there are boys (Grolier 100 American Books). Provenance: mounted on the front endpaper is the signature of Henry E. Worcester and a manuscript note stating, To James T. von Rosenzwinge, This copy of Huckleberry Finn was given to Henry Elwynne Worcester your great-great grandfather by his son Horatio, your great grandfather for Christmas, 1885. BAL 3415. Grolier 100 American Books 87. Original green cloth. First state of frontispiece. Illustrations by E. W. Kemble. Slight wear to spine ends. Early owner provenance statement and clipped signature mounted to front endpapers. An excellent, tight, and bright copy with the inner hinges strong. A handsome copy. Descripción: ont> Charles L Webster : New York, 1885. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First edition. The first U. S edition of this famous nineteenth century novel which is frequently cited as one of the Great American Novels. With the author's signature . The first edition, second state. With the BAL points of 'with the saw' instead of 'with the was' to page 57, the erroneous page reference '88' is changed to '87' at page 13, and at page 9 the misprint 'decided' has been corrected to 'decides'. Illustrated, with one hundred and seventy four illustrations total, by E W Kemble. Kemble is best known for his illustrations in this first edition, particularly for his caricatures. He subsequently illustrated Twain's 'Puddin' Head Wilson' and Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. With Mark Twain's signature held in a plastic slipcase and loosely inserted. It reads 'Truly Yours Mark Twain. ' Mark Twain was the pen name of the American writer and humorist, Samuel Langhorne Clemens. 'Huckleberry Finn' was the first work in major American literature to be written in vernacular English. It is noticable for its description of people and places along the Mississippi River. It tells the story of Huckleberry 'Huck' Finn from a first person narrative. Finn narrates Twain's previous novels 'Tom Sawyer Abroad' and 'Tom Sawyer, Detective'. It is regarded as sequel to 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'. Twain wrote this novel twenty years after the Emancipation Proclamation and therefore the end of Civil War America. However, it is set pre-Civil War when slavery was still a fact of life. Twain wrote this satire to expose the hypocrisy of slavery and 'civilized' society. Thematically, 'Huckleberry Finn' explores race and identity. A scarce opportunity to own a first edition of this classic American novel, with the author's signature. Condition: In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, sound, with slight rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Light rubbing to the joints. Several light marks to boards. Hinges are strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots. Overall Condition: Very Good. Nº de ref. del artículo: 062432

Descripción: Charles L. Webster and Company, New York, 1885. First edition, first issue of Twain's masterpiece, one of approximately 500 copies bound in publisher's three-quarters morocco binding. Octavo, original three-quarters brown morocco and marbled boards, gilt-decorated spine, marbled endpapers. Lithographic frontispiece and with 174 illustrations by E.W. Kemble, photographic portrait frontispiece of the bust of Mark Twain by Karl Gerhardt. Copies of Huckleberry Finn in the original publisher's leather bindings are quite rare: "The relative rarity of the cloth and leather bindings is clear. Less than two weeks before publication, [the publisher] Webster announced that he was binding 20,000 copies in cloth, another 2,500 in sheep, and 500 copies in three-quarter leather. The remaining 7000 copies of the first printing were probably bound up in similar proportions leather copies dried out, cracked apart, and have survived in even fewer numbers than the original production numbers would promise" (MacDonnell, 35). In very good condition, rebacked with light rubbing to extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very nice example. Twain initially conceived of the work as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that would follow Huckleberry Finn through adulthood. Beginning with a few pages he had removed from the earlier novel, Twain began work on a manuscript he originally titled Huckleberry Finn's Autobiography. Twain worked on the manuscript off and on for the next several years, ultimately abandoning his original plan of following Huck's development into adulthood. He appeared to have lost interest in the manuscript while it was in progress, and set it aside for several years. After making a trip down the Hudson River, Twain returned to his work on the novel. Upon completion, the novel's title closely paralleled its predecessor's: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). Twain composed the story in pen on notepaper between 1876 and 1883. Paul Needham, stated, "What you see is [Clemens'] attempt to move away from pure literary writing to dialect writing." For example, Twain revised the opening line of Huck Finn three times. He initially wrote, "You will not know about me", which he changed to, "You do not know about me", before settling on the final version, "You don't know about me, without you have read a book by the name of 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'; but that ain't no matter." The revisions also show how Twain reworked his material to strengthen the characters of Huck and Jim, as well as his sensitivity to the then-current debate over literacy and voting. Ernest Hemingway once declared about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "All modern literature comes from one book by Mark Twain. It s the best book we ve had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing since.". Nº de ref. del artículo: 73064

Descripción: New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885, 1885. Octavo (214 x 164 mm). Publisher's half morocco, marbled edges, gilt rules to covers, spine lettered gilt with gilt decorated compartments, marbled endpapers. Spine sunned, extremities and tips worn, covers a little scuffed, some foxing and marks to contents. An excellent copy. Photogravure portrait frontispiece (second state, with the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Company and with "Karl Gerhardt, Sc." added to the finished edge of the shoulder), illustrated throughout with 173 text illustrations after E. W. Kemble. First US edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the publishers to Daniel Whitford, Clemens's lawyer: "To Daniel Whitford, with regards of the publisher, Chas. L. Webster. New York, February 21st, 1885." Daniel Whitford, attorney for New York firm Alexander & Green, acted for Webster & Company and was also retained by Clemens several times. He acted for Clemens in the highly publicised lawsuit over the dramatisation of the Prince and the Pauper by Abby Sage Richardson. In 1890, Clemens and the producer, Daniel Frohman, were sued by Edward H. House, who claimed that Richardson's adaptation was plagiarised from House's dramatisation of the novel, written for Clemens years before. Frohman paid House from Clemens's royalties to prevent the closure of the play; in turn, Clemens sued Frohman for his royalties (amounting to five or six thousand dollars) in 1894. Much bibliographical confusion has been generated by Huckleberry Finn. In fact, only three substantive changes were introduced after the first printing: at p. 13 the erroneous page reference "88" was changed to "87"; at p. 57 the misprint "with the was" was corrected to "with the saw"; and at p. 9 the misprint "Decided" was corrected to "Decides". This copy has all these in first state. The frontispiece was printed separately, inserted at random, and has no relation to the order of the printed sheets. At some stage it was realised that the Uncle Silas illustration on page 283 had been mischievously tampered with and was cancelled. In this copy, the illustration is in second state. BAL 3415; Grolier, 100 American, 87; Johnson, pp. 43-50; Kevin MacDonnell, "Huck Finn among the Issue-Mongers," Firsts; The Book Collector's Magazine, Volume 8, Number 9 (September 1998), pp. 28-35. Descripción: New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885, 1885. Square octavo. Original green pictorial cloth blocked in black and gilt, titles to spine and front cover in gold and black. Housed in a green flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Contemporary pencilled ownership inscription dated 1885 to head of front free endpaper. A little rubbing and couple of tiny spots of wear to spine ends and tips, front inner hinge with neat superficial tissue repair and a couple of tiny splits, book block sound and tight, short closed tear to head of rear free endpaper. A very good, fresh copy in bright cloth. Photogravure frontispiece of Karl Gerhardt's portrait bust of Clemens, 173 text illustrations after E. W. Kemble. First US edition, first printing. Only three substantive changes were introduced after the first printing: at p. 13 the erroneous page reference "88" was changed to "87"; at p. 57, 11 lines from the bottom the misprint "with the was" was corrected to "with the saw"; and at p. 9 the misprint "Decided" was corrected to "Decides" (this last change overlooked by Johnson, Blanck et al.) These are the only points to distinguish between the first two printings, and our copy has all three in first state. The first printing of 30,000 copies was done using electrotype plates, produced simultaneously on different presses, hence minor variations within the first printing due to damaged plates. The frontispiece is in the first state with the table cloth visible and unsigned on the finished edge of the bust, but this was separately printed and inserted in copies at random, and so has no bearing on priority. Copies were issued in leather bindings (sheep or three-quarters morocco), in blue cloth for those who wanted it uniform with Tom Sawyer and, as here, in green cloth. There is no priority between them: all were first available to the public on the same day in February 1885. At some stage it was realised that the Uncle Silas illustration on p. 283 had been mischievously tampered with. In this copy, the illustration is in the second (or arguably third) state, with the changes removed. Descripción: Charles L. Webster And Company 1884/85, 1884. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. First American Edition; First Printing. A professionally restored and rebound First American Edition from the very limited sheep skin covered first print run. This copy, meticulously rebound in a copy of the original boards (also included as verification of the book's original state), with finish matching the original and with red and black morocco spinal labels. Water stain to the lower inside corner along bottom edge, of the first 75 pages, about 3 inches by 1 inch at front, diminishing as pages advance. tanned page edges, no chips and not brittle. All points as for a true first edition first printing: Title-page bound in; page 57 "was for saw"; Illustration Index "him and another man" listed on page 88; page 155 lacked the final 5 of the page number which was corrected and restruck with an elevated and larger type set "5"; page 283 is bound-in, in the first state with Silas Phelps's trousers showing a definite curve; Frontis is state 2 with the imprint of Heliotype Printing, table cloth and table not visible and the artist's name on the edge of the bust; copyright page dated 1884; page 143 with "l" missing from "Col." at top of illustration and with broken "b" in "body" on line seven. This is the very rare first state of Huck Finn that is seen only in a few of the leather bound copies of the book (of which this is one) that were issued before the "pornographic" illustration on p. 283 was discovered. These leather-bounds, needless to say, are now prized collector's items"[Freedman, The First Edition of Huckleberry Finn: An Overview in Proteus, Fall, 1984].Copies of Huckleberry Finn in the original publisher s leather bindings are quite rare. "The relative rarity of the cloth and leather bindings is clear. Speculatively, shortly before publication, Webster announced that he was binding 20,000 copies in cloth, another 2,500 in sheep, and 500 copies in three-quarter leather. Copies bound in leather dried out, cracked apart, this copy being one, where the spine broke off leaving only the boards attached (again, these are included). Details and photos available upon request for serious inquiries. Nº de ref. del artículo: 19895
