Faint, semi-circular mark to rear cover, else a fresh, very Near Fine copy. In the first state dustjacket, unclipped (priced $2.50), with some light rubbing and a handful of tiny tears; very Near Fine. Folded and laid into this copy is a short, typed letter of provenance, signed by Michael Murphy: "This copy of A Farewell To Arms was signed for me by Hemingway in 1957 at his home outside Havana. Michael Murphy." Housed in a bespoke half-morocco slipcase and chemise, the colors matching the blue and orange on the dustjacket. Hemingway's third novel, recounting a love affair between an American expatriate and an English nurse, set during the Italian campaign of World War I. This copy inscribed to Hemingway scholar and biographer Michael Murphy, author of Hemingway: The Best of What He Had (1974), Hemingway: A 75th Anniversary Tribute (1974, with Vincent Starrett), and Murphy on Hemingway (1978). Murphy is best known for his 1977 novel Hemingsteen: A Novel Based on the Life of Ernest Hemingway. Henry Pfeiffer was a philanthropist and uncle to Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. Paul Pfeiffer, Pauline's father, and uncles Henry and G. A. founded Pfeiffer Pharmaceutical Company. Paul left the company and moved his family to Piggott, Arkansas to make a life for his family. This copy was signed and inscribed in Piggott, the family's estate, to his wife's uncle Henry. Ernest's marriage to Pauline and the influence of the Pfeiffer family was incredibly important to Hemingway's life, career, and literary endeavors. During the course of their thirteen year marriage, Hemingway started and/or finished "A Farewell to Arms", "Winner Take Nothing", "Green Hills of Africa", "To Have and Have Not", "The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories", and "For Whom the Bells Tolls". Pauline's father Paul even renovated the family barn in Piggott into a workspace for Hemingway. Uncle G. A. Pfeiffer was the couple's benefactor, having purchased homes for them in Key West and Paris, as well as purchasing cars for them, and more importantly, financing an African Safari in 1933 which became the basis of Hemingway's novels, "Green Hills of Africa", as well as for the short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". This book, A Farewell to Arms was dedicated to G. A. Pfeiffer by Hemingway. "A Farewell to Arms" also has a Pfeiffer connection with the dramatic ending that was based on his wife Pauline's difficult birth to their son Patrick. To say that the Pfeiffer family had a major impact on Hemingway's career would be an understatement.
