Exceedingly rare PRESENTATION OFFPRINT of the first edition of an early paper in set theory by one of the great quadrumvirate in the history of logic (with Aristotle, Frege and Gödel), and ONE OF ONLY TWO WORKS PUBLISHED UNDER 'BOTH' THE AUTHOR'S SURNAMES. Born Alfred Tajtelbaum, he changed his name officially on 19 May 1924, after which all his publications were by 'Alfred Tarski'. In this paper he demonstrated that seven well-known propositions in cardinal arithmetic whose proofs use the Axiom of Choice are actually equivalent to that axiom. (See Steven Givant, 'Unifying threads in Alfred Tarski's work', The Mathematical Intelligencer, 21:1, Springer, 1999). This copy's presentee, Stanislaw Zaremba (1863-1942), was elected first president of the Mathematical Society of Krakow on its inception in 1919. The society became the Polish Mathematical Society in 1920. In the same year the journal Fundamenta Mathematicae (from which this paper is extracted) was founded in Warsaw. Devoted to topology, set theory, and foundations of mathematics, it was the first specialised journal in the history of mathematics. The early volumes were filled mainly with the work of Polish mathematicians. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Offprint, 4 leaves, original staples, margins wide and untrimmed, fragile at edges and with tears not affecting text, uniformly browned, author's presentation inscription 'Szanownemu Panu Profesorowi Stanislawowi Zarembie od autora' on upper margin of first page.
