The occasion celebrated the bi-centennial of the deatth of Gaspar de Portola, the Catalan who first explored Upper California from San Diego to San Francisco, and who died in Lerida. The underlying theme was the similarities and differences between the agriculture of California and that of Catalonia, two regions favored by "Mediterranean" climates. Participants included representatives from the UC system and the USDA, and the languages employed were English, Spanish, and occasionally Catalan, in parallel translations.
