In May 1901 the Salisbury Galleries of New Bond Street announce the biggest exhibition of Old Master paintings ever seen in Europe. But three weeks before it opens one of Britain's leading art experts, Christopher Montague, is found murdered in his study. When Lord Francis Powerscourt is called in to investigate he finds that every book, notepad and scrap of paper has been removed from the scene of the crime. Prior to his death, Montague was working on something that would have rocked the art world and ruined the Salisbury Galleries. Did his recent article that claimed a number of Old Masters had been painted by a single hand, working in the last ten years, have anything to do with his untimely death?
Powerscourt embarks on a journey through the often treacherous world of art dealers and picture restorers, in pursuit of a master forger. With Lady Lucy he crosses the Atlantic to America where the trail goes cold: but after the glamour, excitement and danger of New York Powerscourt picks up the chase in a derelict Norfolk mansion, where the truth is finally revealed.
