Earl was born in Batavia, Illinois, on March 5, 1930. The son and nephew of several loving and funny alcoholics, Earl was raised in a world of heavy drinkers. He began drinking in college, seminary and while serving in the military. He began his road to recovery in the 1960’s as he also began his second career as one of the leading experts in addiction and counselors of addicts. Over the next four decades, Earl earned both his Masters Degree and Doctorate in the field of drug and alcohol addiction and recovery. He taught many college courses on addiction and taught DUI (Driving Under the Influence) classes. He started several addiction treatment programs, including one for the homeless in Washington, DC, where he lived at Luther Place Shelter for eighteen months. During these decade, Earl, continued to serve his congregations as a dedicated pastor, and his family as a beloved husband, father of five, grandfather of fifteen and great-grandfather of three and counting... Earl was a prophet, poet, political activist, philatelist, preacher and peacemaker! He loved jazz, camping, impressionist’ art, theology, dramatic literature, haiku, bird watching and most of all, he loved baseball, first his Cubs, later his A’s! He was creative, strong, smart, funny, thoughtful, forgiving, courageous, empathic, and kind. The world lost a great soul when he died on June 30, 2003. He continues to be remembered and missed by all who knew him.
