The following pages contain the history of an educational and scientific experiment. That this history is deemed worthy of publication is in itself a proof that the experiment is considered a success, and the various letters of inquiry which have been received by the author have been taken as an indication of the interest which has attended the cruise of the "Emily E. Johnson." The narrative is intended to give all the information drawn from our experience that would be of benefit to any one who in future might desire to undertake a similar cruise at the minimum of expense. To the zoologists who may read this account the writer desires to say that he has endeavored to treat the faunæ of the various regions visited from the standpoint of the general zoologist only, with a view to giving an idea of the facies of the collections from the several localities. The limitations imposed by the somewhat meagre literature at the disposal of the writer, as well as those necessitated by the routine of his official work in connection with the University, must be a partial excuse for the errors which the specialist will undoubtly find in the identifications of the species noted.
