I Have not lived to see my hairs grow grey, Nor hath the hand of age bedimmed mine eyes, My life is yet the morning of my day, Its first pag'd sun has scarce begun to rise; My home is not within the palace walls, Nor am I heir to any titled dower, Yet, I have loved the mighty waterfalls, And gathered joy from many a simple flower; The humble warblings of a little bird, Is joyous music to my youthful ear, Oft have I lingered 'neath the notes I've heard, And sent them back a smile for strains so dear. Greenfields, sweet brooks, and all the simple flowers, Are things which weave in life its sunny hours. I Love to wander in the silvery eve, Of some enchanting summer's day, And watch the golden glimmerings weave, The pensive dirge and welcome lay; When all the earth is silent, still, And music rises from the rill, Like Nature's speech so wild and free, It charms me with its witchery. It is the time for thought and song, For the Muses gaily trip along In the gentle gale and fluttering breeze Giving strains of joy to the bending trees. I'll sit and rest in this silent bower, Which is shaded by the hill, 28 A Summer's Evening. And see the stream with its crystal dower, Become wedded to the rill; And I'll weave a strain for a bridal lay, Of the beauties of the earth, For the birds to chant as they fly away, A song of love and mirth. The world of flowers is waking still, 'Tis a lovely sight to see; Them bow their heads at their Maker's will, And close from their reverie; They all are fraught with heaven-born charms, The violet and the bright blue bell, And sweet they lay in Nature's arms, Like gems to stud her coronal; There is the daisy with its simple lore, Rearing its head in a lonely spot, On the streamlet's side, I love it more, For its home and humble lot; F...
