Reseña del editor:
In the City of Brotherly Love, where murder and school graduation rates plague a once great city, only one person can fight the evil ones in the name of liberty and justice. Only one person emerges with powers untold in the human world. He’s a force to be reckoned with! He is so powerful that animals take orders from him, as soldiers do from a general. In this story, only one brain amongst millions evolves with the ability to lead an army of animals in defense of the Liberty Bell ― a bell that once rang for independence and today is a symbol of our freedom. One kid trying to stop terrorists who meet at the zoo to plan their attack. One kid, one brain, and zoo animals in the defense of freedom. The battle begins...
Reseña del editor:
The Charter School General is a story about good outwitting evil. The evil prince of this world plans to steal the Liberty Bell to discredit America and show his power. A poor black kid in South Philadelphia takes on the devil and it's a fight to the finish. The prince of evil wants to move the bell to his hidden den, third cave level, and invite his evil friends to snicker at and mock the most famous and regarded ding-dong in the free world. A perfect plan, indeed! One might think foolproof. A strategy so studied and executed by evil that nothing can stop it. The prince sends his 'travelers,' Shark Dog, Gutchy, Zeeta, Poetgirl, Sewerbreath, and the mad thinker and in-country commander, T-square. They arrive in Philadelphia and check into different hotels. Hiding close by to support the travelers waits The Magician, with her bag of evil tricks, ready for the call if and when evil gets ambushed. But the brilliance of this hateful scheme is the meeting and talking site the prince has selected for his travelers: A place free from CIA or FBI listening devices; a place where meeting and talking in pairs and threes would not draw suspicion; a place where people walk and gawk and animals pace; a place where the last species of many endangered animals remain: The Philadelphia Zoo. Unbelievable as it may seem, this kid, Jamil Jamil, was born with a 'secret,' a brain-mechanism that allows him to exchange thoughts with animals, which he calls mind memorandums. He dislikes the mind memorandums and thinks they make his life miserable. Only, he doesn't know what misery is until he's contacted by Bette, an elephant at the Philadelphia Zoo, and summoned to the zoo. Sneaking into the zoo through a hole in the fence, he is told-through mind memorandums, or what the animals call 'visions'-about the evil plot to steal the bell. When his school principal, Sister Pat, doesn't believe his story--who would?--he follows the advice of his Grandma Rody: "Boy, use them zoo animals and stop the terrorists. Ain't nobody stealing a bell that's stood so long for freedom." From there it's a race to the Liberty Bell. Along the way, a 500 pound Gallipolis tortoise hides in Rittenhouse Square; a deadly king cobra slithers into the Schuylkill River on its way to the Delaware; a lowland gorilla pole volts over the zoo fence; a female lion tracks subway trains deep underground; a red kangaroo hits like a running horse. Add to that a legion of peacocks, ticked off geese, navigational pigeons, misunderstood rats, dogs-some dragging leashes, some not--and cats from PAWs shelters all over the city. They make up an army Jamil Jamil uses to defend freedom and liberty. It's a story you don't want to miss.
