"James Smith, a clergyman from Richmond Hill, Ontario, & his wife travelled to Great Britain to renew old friendships & to visit relatives never before met. Mr. Smith has expanded their travel diary into an interesting & informative book, well & beautifully illustrated with his own drawings. After travelling about Scotland in the care of a wartime friend, they hired a car & headed south. They managed to cope with the intricacies of right hand drive & the British roads & roadsign system, & the frustrations of 'closing hours'. Their meeting with elderly relatives in their search for their own family history was fruitful but underlies the need for any of us contemplating doing the same to hurry. Two of the ninety-year-olds who were their parents siblings died in the year following the Smith's visit, & any further reminiscences are now lost. The book beckons lovers of England, Wales, & Scotland to consider another trip & to follow the Smiths' example & explore the roads which lead to forgotten villages - villages seemingly untouched by time - & their friendly, welcoming residents."
