Descripción Hardcover. Condición: Fair. 1st Edition. Ex-Aylesham library (in Kent coalfield area). Usual stamps. Damage to spine but book intact. Nostalgic and moving account of the life of John Elks born in Staffordshire in 1885 and who spent much of his working life in the Kent coalfield, now a distant memory (though industrial-archaeology remains near me) after the Thatcher destruction of the industry, with very little to replace it. A highlight is the ineffectual prosecution of the Betteshanger miners who went on strike during the war and whose imprisonment was quickly overturned by the panicked authorities worried about loss of coal output (the Donovan Royal Commission on Trade Unions in 1968 had an Appendix on the case). 272 pages. Quoted postage for UK 2nd class. Overseas at least £7.45 due to book's size. Nº de ref. del artículo: 1584
