"Almost forgotten and never before published, the Churchill letters offer a fresh view of the traditional saga ot the Forty-niner. For, as the books's two editors point out, it has been more often the case to characterize the period with 'stories of great wealth and rousing adventuresome time'. Churchill described instead the day to day practical problems faced by the vast majority of Forty-niners. Hew he worked to try and overcome these difficulties makes for a volume filled with both touching emotion and informative history." from the jacket flap. Not Price Clipped. Pristine, no wear. Descripción Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. xiv+136pp. Illus. in text. Charles Churchill took passage from New York to Chagres in the summer of 1849. His letters are supplemented with replies from his brother in Ohio. Besides experiences en route, they describe the discouragement of digging for gold and the drudgery of clerking in a mining camp store. Other letters report experiences in 1851 with an American party which marched off to Sonora as miners, only to be seen as incipient if not actual filibusters. This venture was also a failure. The editors add details and explanations and connective passages to relate these episodes to the social history of the gold rush. Further Reading and Index. Nº de ref. del artículo: 901529
