Soft Covers. Condición: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Maps Ilustrador. 1st. "The North" or "The Far North" were names applied to the territory of NZ lying north of Auckland. It was the area where the first European settlements were established and was soon noted for its production of timber from the Kauri tree, which became an important export commodity. The Kauri also had a by-product, Kauri Gum, and while this material was first exported to Sydney in the early 1800s, it iwas the mid-century before regular shipments were being sent to overseas markets, where it was used for industrial purposes, notably in paints and varnishes. By the late 1800s the gum had become NZ's second most valuable export. he author has included a section on the gum industry in his book, including the role Maori, and Dalmatian immigrants, played in its development. The general history of the region, its various industries, difficulties and progress and its contribution to NZ's development and economics are among the many topics "The North" covers. An impressiver feature is the fine selection of illustrations, particularly historic photos, the author gathered to accompany his informative text. First edition of 1981 by Coromandel Press, 127 pages including index, eight colour reproducftions of early Northland paintings, b/w photos throughout text section, with a further 26 historical photographs taken at various locations at back, double page photo at FFEPs, map of Northland on RFEPs, one map in text. pictorial card covers are VG+ with sl;ight wear front corners, text block also VG+, author's ink signature on title page.
