Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband ein wenig berieben und weist kleine Flecken auf, Buchrücken etwas verfärbt, Bleistifteintragungen auf Vorsatz, sonst guter Zustand / binding a little rubbed and has small stains, spine a little discolored, pencil inscriptions on endpapers, otherwise good condition. - PREFACE Rhetoric in antiquity was respected for its ability to affect the decisions and behavior of men. Rhetoric was taught in schools and practiced in ceremonial, forensic and political forums, and its merits were debated by philosophers. Numerous works appeared expounding upon the subject, the most notable example being Aristotle's Rhetoric. The Rhetoric comprehensively interprets the phenomena of rhetorical discourse. Even contemporary theorists acknowledge the importance and farsightedness of this work. Incredibly, "Twentieth century scholarship concerning oral communication refers more to the Rhetoric than to any other source" (Brandes, 1968, p. 482). The purpose of this book is to provide a bibliography of the Rhetoric's translations and of research investigating its implications. Every effort was expended to compile an exhaustive list. With the exception of theses and dissertations all entries are published materials. Medieval manuscripts are omitted, as they are cataloged and published elsewhere. Each entry is listed alphabetically and a chronological index is appended. Most entries were examined first-hand with the exception of especially rare works available only in European libraries. Certain entries, while not directly explicating the Rhetoric, are included for their general relevance to Aris- mtelian rhetorical theory. Several individuals who contributed to the development of this book deserve mention. This project was initiated in me Spring of 1968 at the suggestion of Carroll C. Arnold while the compiler was a graduate student at the Pennsylvania State University. Wayne N. Thompson of the University of Houston critically advised my interpretation of the Rhetoric and the bibliographic method. Gerald F. Else and C. Wil- Uam Colburn of the University of Michigan read early drafts and offered several suggestions and corrections. The most nenerous guidance was given by Bruce E. Gronbeck of the University of Michigan (now of the University of Iowa) under whom I completed the doctorate. The positive features of this book derive in great measure from his insight and considerable knowledge. I wish also to acknowledge the cooperation of the librarians affiliated with the universities of California at Los Angeles, Cambridge, Houston, Michigan, Oxford, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State, Rice, Southern California, Texas Tech, and the British Museum, Huntington Library, and Library of Congress. To my wife, Susan, a special "Thank you" for tolerating, if not always appreciating, the several years required to complete this work. Five hundred years of published research on the Rhetoric of Aristotle is worth commemorating; hopefully this bibliography contributes to that end. / CONTENTS: Preface / A Brief History of Aristotle s Rhetoric / The Bibliography / Addendum / Chronological Index.
