SIGNED in full & INSCRIBED by the author in black ink on title page: "To Lloyd: 'My hand delights to trace unusual things, and deviate from the known and common way.' (Virginia Woolf: 'A Room of One's Own'). With our best wishes, Harold Marshall and Jean. January 8, 1997". Also includes laid-in AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the author. The ALS, also dated "8.1.97", is one-sided, with "P.S." spilling over to verso, & includes the author's address label affixed to upper corner. The letter contains details pertaining to the book, plus personal matters. Additionally, the author has hand-corrected a name in the printed index at rear. The recipient of the book & letter is Australian Ambassador Lloyd D. Thomson, this copy from his library. Diplomat Lloyd Thomson (1919-2015) was the first Australian Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican) (1973-74, 1980-83), & resident outside Italy at other Australian diplomatic posts, including the Netherlands (The Hague), Ireland (Dublin), the UN in Switzerland (Geneva), plus Head of Mission with the Department of Foreign Affairs, along with other diplomatic posts. Lloyd Thomson was also involved in the theatre as a playwright, actor & producer, notably co-writing the Australian musical The Sentimental Bloke (to the poetry of C.J. Dennis). Illustrated with 21 b&w photographs. Includes index. From rear cover: "Harold Marshall was born in Adelaide, but his roots and 'soul' were planted in the hard terrain of Broken Hill".
