Soft cover. Condición: NF. No Jacket. Photos, Map, Plans, Documents Ilustrador. Reprint. With the sub-title "Reminiscences and Records of Port Awanui, East Coast" this is a fascinating account of one of the numerous small ports on the East Coast of NZ's North Island that were once vital to the communications, trade and commerce of numerous communities north from Gisborne, but largely abandoned when adequate roading was provided. The book is the work of Stephanie and Ivan Hughes, both with strong connections to the East Coast and conscious of the historic importance of these little harbours to its successful settlement, Port Awanui in particular. Through a process of intensive research, many interviews with district old-timers and their relatives and collecting photographs,.those endeavours resulted in this fine publication, not of dry history but recollections, reminiscences, anecdotes personal experiences and archival material. Here is pioneering NZ at its most determined and dogged, overcoming difficulties of isolation, rugged county and coastline, to provide services from the sea before road transport made the local ports like Awanui redundant, but not forgotten. First published by the authors in 1988, with this first reprint in 1991, 156 pages, b/w photos throughout, map, two plans and several document reproductions. Green pictorial card covers NF, internally excellent, no inscriptions. A scarce book.
