When the first pioneer settlers arrived in the Tairua area in the 1860s it was to win a hard-earned living through the exploitation of the kauri trees which were abundant in the rugged hills of the Coromandel Peninsula. They setttled on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and its adjacent harbour. The hey-day for the settlement was provided by its timber mills on the harbour, with work also in the bush-clad hills and the gold mines established in the district. When the author first visited Tairua in the 1940 its population had drastically reduced, but that environment soon began to change as social mobility and better incomes made the area a popularwholiday destination at both Tairua and Pauanui, on the other side of the harbour. These are now thriving resorts and townships and a beacon for thousands of holiday makers each summer. However, Francis Bennett, writes not of today's prosperity, but of the pioneering days, of hard work, whatever pursuit was followed, isolation with shipping, mainly scows and small steamers, providing outside contact. It was not until the late 1920s that reasonable road access was available via Waihi and Whangamata, but the road over the range to link Tairua-Hikuia with Thames was left waiting in the wings. Following World War One a soldier farming scheme was opened in the Hikuia Valley but development of agriculture was hampered by lack of roading. Earlier, as the kauri were felled the production of timber diminished accordingly and when milling ceased employment and population decreased. Gold mining, which promised much, proved to be largely short-term as was gum digging, while agricultural progress was slow throughout the district. In 1847 the European population of the district was167, 121being males, four years later the total was 324 and almost 500 by 1881, when the timber industry was flourishing. By 1886 the disctrict population had fallen to just under 400 as "The timber mill struggled on, getting deeper and deeper in debt, but still employing a goodly number of men.," By 1901 the Tairua township recorded a population of 360, but the author remarks that "It would be over seventy years before this total would again be reached." The 1945 census recorded the Tairua locality population at 73. From that point on it began to show growth, reaching 250 by 1966, 560 by 1976 and 700 in 1981. In 1967 the direct link over the range to Thames was officially opened, providing a golden gateway for residential and holiday homes. The early boom and bust experience of the Tairua district was not unusual in provincial NZ, with the pattern of timber production and/or mining preceeding a switch to the more stable occupation of farming. For the Tairua area there was the priceless advantage of natural resources ideal for holiday resort development. Francis Bennett's "Tairua" is an excellent example, in presentation, content and illustrations, of the very best in local history. First edition from Pauanui Information Centre of 1986, 218 pages including sources, 16 appendices and index, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, some drawings and art, frontis map, several other maps, plans, diagrams and document reproductions. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF, ditto the text, block, no inscriprions, The wrap-round colour art DJ, showing Tairua in 1885 was painted by the author, is also NF and not price clipped.
