Críticas:
"This book is an excellent in-depth study of modern Hebrew fiction in the last hundred years. The emergence of Hebrew literature "against all odds" is a fascinating modern cultural phenomenon." Gila Ramras-Rauch "This volume is an abridgement of Gershon Shaked's celebrated five-volume work Hebrew Fiction 1880-1980... In his sensitive and sinuous account, Shaked shows how Hebrew fiction has continually portrayed the struggle between aspiration and disillusionment... This rich book tackles a complex subject with verve and analytical power."--Times Literary Supplement, 1 December 2000 "Gershon Shaked, an Israeli literary scholar of immense, wide-ranging knowledge ... in charting Hebrew literary history, also gives us a fascinating view of the relationship between Herbew and European literatures... This abridgement and translation of a five-volume work in Hebrew is organised as a chronological narrative, with some thematic and theoretical transgressions. With great descriptive verve, Shaked tells an enthralling story which begins in 1881 with the progroms that followed the assassination of Tsar Alexander II... In providing us with the readable adventure story of the language and the literature, Shaked has made an immense contribution to both."--Glenda Abramson, Jewish Chronicle, 22 December 2000
Reseña del editor:
Gershon Shaked's history of modern Hebrew fiction traces the emergence and development of a literature "against all odds" - from its European roots in the 1880s, when it had neither a country nor a spoken language, to the flowering of a literary culture on Israeli soil from the founding of the State through the 1990s. The product of more than 20 years of research, it is unique in its scope, profiling four generations of Hebrew writers from Mendele Mokher Seforim, I. L. Peretz, and Haim Nahman Bialik through Shmuel Yosef Agnon, Aharon Appelfeld, Amalia Kahana-Carmon, Amos Oz, and A. B. Yehoshua, to the recent writings of David Grossman, Meir Shalev, and Orly Castel-Bloom. Through detailed discussions of themes and style in specific texts, Shaked conveys the richness of the Hebrew literary tradition. At the same time, through biographical surveys, historical observations, and socio-cultural and political analyses, he illuminates the relationship of these writings to the context in which they were produced, revealing the complex inter-textual play between Hebrew literature and life.
