Soon after WWII, an impressive series of armed forces campaign and unit histories was published by the NZ Department of Internal Affairs. However, the history of the NZ services in the Korean conflict (1950-1953) took much longer to eventuate. In 1992 a first volume appeared, covering the political, international and associated aspects of the war. This second volume, of 1996, is devoted to combat operations and the deloyments. The first NZ involvement was the arrival of two RNZN frigates off the South Korean coast in August. Army units, mainly formed from volunteers and known as Kayforce, sailed to Korea at the late in 1950. This force, artillery and supporting arms, operated with British and other Commonweath troops in operations in Korea. NZ's forces remained on service until an Armistace was signed in July 1953. However, post Armistace the commitment to South Korea did not end immediatly and it was July 1957 before the last of the Kayforce personnel left for home. Ian McGibbon has compiled an excalland record on the NZ military commitment to the Korean conflict. His was not an easy task, as many documents that would have aided his research were either lost, destroyed or otherwise unavailable. He was able to fill most of these gaps from other sources to produce a volume equal to that of its WWII predecessors. First edition of 1996 from Oxford University Press in association with the Historical Branch Department of Internal Affairs, 508 pages including 11 appendices, plus notes, bibliography and index, 135 b/w illustrations (mainly photos) in eight collations, 25 maps, numerous cartoons, some sketches.
