The REV. CHARLES LUTWIDGE JOHNSON, otherwise known as Lewis Carroll, was born in 1832, and was a lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church, Oxford. He never married, but spent much of his time with children, which led to his dazzling fictional creations. Other works include THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK, which is also available in Penguin Classics. He died in 1898.
