Particular bindings, mostly 19th century, mostly signed, by some 600 different binders, from 185 locations, mostly London, but including Baltimore, Beirut, Byculla, Cairo, Cork, Jedburgh, Jerusalem, Kilkenny, Middle Hill, Port Hope, Saintiago [sic], St. Helier, Tonypandy and many others; substantial groups commissioned by the British & Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) and the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge (SPCK) ; and in materials including bakelite, bark, beadwork, canvas, cork, cowhide, deerskin, maunchline, mother of pearl, percaline, silk, snakeshide ; a large number of embossed bindings and a small number of reference books. The whole catalogued by the collector and sold by George Bayntun, Manvers Street, Bath.

Laminated illustrated wrappers, 8vo, 22 cm, [208] pp, illustrations ; 22 cm 1029 items. The collection was sold en bloc to the British Library and a George Bayntun printed slip laid in stated that "We are sending out a few copies [of the catalogue] to friends as a record". From John Collins' introduction - "The present catalogue illustrates the development of signing from the engraved label onwards. It certainly includes some rather bad bindings, many produced as the industrialisation of binding speeded up, but almost all are of documentary interest. The great majority are what one might call custom bindings; but I have included a small sample of publisher's bindings, partly for completeness, and partly because the boundary between a single and a multiple commission is more difficult to draw than one might suppose.
