VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book, sorry no dust-jacket. "Workman and Soldier: A Tale of Paris Life" By James F. Cobb. This book is believed to be the First Edition, published by Griffith and Farran, London, 1880. 12mo, 19.5 cm x 13.7 cm x 3.3 cm, Maroon cloth-covered boards, Gilt & black embossed lettering & decoration on spine & front cover, Clear Embossed publisher's logo on back cover, Tissue-guarded Frontispiece. 24 pages publisher's catalogue at rear of book. 343 pages. Weight: 628 Grams. CONTENTS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!!! However, there are several cracks between pages throughout, including splits in paper between front pastedown & 1st end paper at front of book. Some rusty staples visible between some pages which look uneven, this book may have been repaired by previous owner. Spine is slightly discoloured & soft but mostly clean, small split in cloth at tail, bumped and scuffed either end, gilt & decoration fully visible but slightly worn away in places, gilt a little dull. Cover is a little marked (more so on back), gilt & decoration very nice, edges bumped, faded & scuffed. Corners are bumped, scuffed & frayed, boards exposed there. Faint indents on reverse of Frontispiece, its tissue-guard is foxed & creased. Some pages (very few) have folds/creases in corners and/or alongside spine, and/or faint smudges in margins. Small mark in bottom corner of pages 144 to 150. Small sticker on last pastedown. Light age tanning & occasional foxing throughout, more pronounced at beginning & end of book.
