[modest wear to extremities, light bumping to lower corners, colorful vintage bookplate on front pastedown; the jacket is lightly edgeworn, with teensy bits of paper loss at several corners]. Novel about the female workforce in a magazine office, "a story which says something new about a large segment of our American scene." But don't get too excited: "Emphatically, this is no feminist novel; it simply recognizes the fact that no longer is a woman's base necessarily home and family; a job can be an important part of 'home' to the modern woman." The author's first novel, it mirrors her own work experience up until that time; by the time of its publication, though, she had moved to Los Angeles, and as "Jane Ardmore" (following a divorce and re-marriage) would soon establish herself as a leading movie-industry publicist and journalist. She did magazine profiles on many major movie stars of the period, and was the collaborator on the memoirs of Eddie Cantor, Edith Head and Joan Crawford. (Joan called her "a bright, darling woman"; I met her once and thought the same.). N° de ref. del artículo 27728
