First edition, first issue with "actresses" for "ancestresses" in line 33, p. 207 of volume 1 and with Chapter XLVII misnumbered Chapter XLVIII in volume 1, 2 vols, 8vo (8.25 in x 5.5 in), pp. viii, 382; viii, 376, extra engraved titles for each volume, 46 engraved plates, wood engraved headpiece illustrations throughout after drawings by the author. 3/4 natural polished calf and marbled boards by Root and Son with their pallet signature on the front free endpapers, backs in six gilt paneled compartments, lettered in the second and third, gilt corner dots and gilt center ornaments in the rest, gilt dates at foot, top edges gilt, matching marbled endpapers. Near fine with age toning mostly to the plates. Very light wear to bindings, lettering pieces are gone. Sheets with light natural age toning, clean, unmarked, complete.
