No author listed. Title pages notes "By the author of Lights and Shadows of Scottish Life". Attributed to John Wilson. Oddly, leather spine labels with "Austin's Works - Vol. II - Margaret Lyndsay". Apparently John Wilson also wrote under the pseudonym of Arthur Austin. "John Wilson of Elleray (1785-1854) was a Scottish advocate, literary critic and author, the writer most frequently identified with the pseudonym Christopher North of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. He was professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University (1820-1851). Wilson contributed to Blackwood's prose tales and sketches, and novels, some of which were afterwards published separately in Lights and Shadows of Scottish Life (1822), The Trials of Margaret Lyndsay (1823), and The Foresters (1825)." FIRST US EDITION, published 1823, in the same year as the first Edinburgh edition. Printed by J. & J. Harper. Bound in contemporary full brown leather, gilt lettering on leather labels to spine.
