"Transportation Picture Reader", by Alice Fienemann, was published in 1939 by Artists and Writers Guild in Poughkeepsie, New York as an elementary school reader. As such it includes question pages that tested students' comprehension. The book, which is in an oversize paperback format, is filled with lots of vintage halftone photographs, depicting various modes of commercial transportation, both historical, and the then current 'marvels of technology'. Of interest to us today are the many period photographs of what were , at the time, the latest in modernization as far as commercial transport went. Thus the book shows the latest in locomotives, ocean liners, and airplanes. ******************************************************** To me , of particular interest, are the sections, with photographs of autogyros, balloons, blimps and dirigibles, and the vast flying boats, or Dorniers (DO-X). Shown also are men working on a tri-motor aeroplane, various crews of ships and trains, as well as passengers on both planes and ocean liners. Amazing to see how open and uncluttered were the seats on a commercial flight of the time. I found the various photographs of period trains and the workers and technical instruments and station housing (such as roundhouses and track-side towers) very interesting to see. Lots and lots of nifty photos, too many to list, The text is genial and engaging. The photographs are all halftone affairs, much like newspaper photographs of the time. The paper used is unavoidably toned (which will be the case with all copies found), but clean. The cover has a bit of edge wear, but is still essentially bright. No lettering on spine. ********************************************** CONDITION -- VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted. Presented as a collectable artifact, this book is not considered suitable for children's use, its paper being fragile. :: EXTERIOR -- Horizontal stress creases and nicking to spine; spine extremities are slightly eroded; covers have various , scattered, small nicks and scuffs; edges display nicking; text-block edges darkened else clean. Soft bumpps to coerner tips, with the back top fore-edge tip having some surface loss; Covers still present brightly. / BINDING -- Intact. fairly solid. / interior -- The paper throughout is considerably toned (darkened) this is unavoidable, due to the choice of paper, which is like pulp or newsprint - a production result. That being said , the leaves throughout are clean and free of marking. There are a few tiny fore-edge nicks and/or tears. On the bottom of the title page is a faint date stamp (June 14 1941) - this likely a receiving date for the original owner (a teacher?) The whole presents brightly, seemingly having had little use. The period photography increases the interest for this book from 1939. N° de ref. del artículo 2254
