24mo, pp 174, [4, adverts of Whittaker and co, London], with wood-engraved frontispiece, title vignette, 12 charming wood-engraved illustrations in text, bound in original roan backed marbled boards, the sides heavily rubbed and worn at corners, internally with a few clean tears and no loss, the first gathering somewhat soiled and shaken with slight fraying at fore-edge, a complete but used copy that is mostly clean, FIRST EDITION THUS; one of several 'updated' children's titles edited in new versions by E H Barker of Thetford; some of his other textbooks are advertised at the end, but this one, recalling Dodsley's early 18th century classic was issued from Skill's toy-shop in Swaffham, its exterior memorably depicted in the frontispiece to this book. Skill is an interesting publisher who issued Scargill's much collected 'Recollections of a Blue-coat Boy' the previous year to this, and in similar format. Like that classic title Barker's Toy Shop, with its updated set of illustrations and text, is quite scrace in any condition, this a complete copy butshowing evidence of use and wear.
