This was the first novel from this German-born writer to be published in English, and it was a much hyped book when Cape published it, translated from the German by Richard and Clara Winston, in 1958 and Viking bought out the U.S. edition a little later the same year. Book club editions, on both sides of the Atlantic, are plentiful, but this true and proper first English language edition is not so common. I'm guessing that this copy might have been a publisher's file copy, or at least have come from the Jonathan Cape offices. Accompanying the book is a fascinating piece of promotional material. It is a 15" x 10" piece of heavy paper, folded once to create a four page brochure, the front and back of which carry the same two paintings by the Swedish artist and illustrator, Gösta Kriland, that adorn the dust jacket, only slightly larger. Inside, this brochure gives information about the book, repeating the blurb from the jacket flaps, plus other stuff like a list of the principal characters and a note from the author. This is a near fine copy, with just some browning to the foredges, in a near fine dust jacket, slightly browned at flap folds and with a hint of wear at spine ends.
