Original publisher's brown cloth, decorated in blind and lettered in gilt (hinges starting, extremities a bit worn). Provenance: With gift inscription to "Master Robert Healey" from "Rj Cuppagr." dated 1848 to recto of front free endpaper. First edition. With brilliantly hand-colored plates, mostly by Whymper. Whymper was an English wood engraver, book illustrator and watercolor painter who specialized in riverscapes. He was also well known for his fine engravings of animals, fish, and landscapes for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (as here). The plates were available individually in addition to the collected edition, which was published in 1846 and 1849. They were offered both colored and uncolored: below the publisher's imprint it states "Price 3/4d. Plain and 2d. Coloured."
