A most handsome example (entry number one of the artist's books in Dieter Schwarz' "Lawrence Weiner: Books 1968-1989: Catalogue Raisonné") of this exceedingly uncommon item limited to one thousand unnumbered copies showing the slightest bit of wear, soiling, and abrading to the extremities of its grey wrappers. First edition, a fresh copy of this iconic artist's book by Lawrence Weiner (1942-2021), considered his first; edition of 1000 copies. "The production of this artist's book by Weiner was financed by the Louis Kellner Foundation, an elusive organization for which Siegelaub had developed an inconclusive charter the year before. After students at Windham College destroyed the site-specific installation he had made there (Staples, Stakes, Twine, Turf) because it blocked their access across the campus lawn, Weiner formulated the famous declaration of intent that would underpin his entire work: '1. The artist may construct the piece. 2. The piece may be fabricated. 3. The piece need not be built. Each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist the decision as to condition rests with the receiver upon the occasion of receivership.' Illustrating this turning point, Statements consists of twenty-four works in the form of texts and organized according to 'General Statements' and 'Specific Statements.' The book's design, which features the pragmatic North American Trade Gothic typeface, is both deceitfully simple and precise."Coelewij & Martinetti, p. 112. Bookworks, the first exhibition of artist's books at the Musuem of Modern Art, was curated by Barbara London and ran from March 17- May 17 1977. The 9 page stapled catalog for the exhibition included a page of text by London and an alphabetical listing of the 189 included items by 147 different artists. Some of the books were displayed in vitrines, while those intended for public reading had a grommet hole punched into the upper left corner and were secured to prevent theft.
