The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization, founded in 1866 in Illinois by Dr. Benjamin F. Stephenson, which encompassed veterans of the Union Army-, Navy-, and Marines, who had served during the Civil War.At the height of its enrollment in the early 1890s, it had more than 400 000 members, including women.
