Herbert Adams (b. 1874, d. 1958), who also wrote two novels using the pseudonym John Gray, is best remembered today for his golf-themed mysteries. The first was The Secret of Bogey House 1925. A VG copy (no D/W). This is the first appearance of Herbert Adams' lawyer detective Jimmie Haswell, but here he has a relatively minor role. Instead it is Tony Bridgman, a professional golfer and Haswell's buddy, who is the intrepid sleuthing hero. The novel begins with the search for a lost golf ball that sends Tony Bridgman to unravel the Secret of Bogey House, ostensibly an innocent pleasure resort. There is bridge, tennis, boating and golf.
