CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 36th Indiana organized in Richmond, Indiana and mustered for a three-year enlistment on Sept. 16, 1861. The regiment fought at the Battle of Shiloh, losing nine men killed and 38 wounded. They fought at Corinth and later at Stone s River, where it had 24 killed, 90 wounded and 18 missing. In the Battle of Chickamauga the regiment had 14 killed, 110 wounded and 13 missing. The regiment later moved with Sherman s army in the Atlanta campaign, taking part in nearly every skirmish and engagement that resulted in the South losing the war. The regiment fought in 17 major engagements. The original strength of the 36th Indiana was 1,177 men total. Loss by death was 234, plus 11 more unaccounted for, which was a twenty percent casualty rate. This regimental history on the 36th Indiana is quite scarce; and one of the few works on the regiment. Published by an early Indiana printing company / newspaper firm, it was likely produced in small numbers. It rarely is offered for sale; RareBook Hub has one reference to it from 1906 and LiveAuctioneers has no reference to it. REFERENCES: DORN IND #117; COULTER 205: "Grose was at Perryvile, Murfreesboro, and later in the Chattanooga-Chickamauga campaign. He followed Sherman to Atlanta and was mustered out after the fall of that city. The narrative is almost entirely a military account, with little travel value."; NEVINS I pg. 98: "A purely military and statistical chronicle of the marches and Western campaigns; the narrative stops with the fall of Atlanta.".
